The confusion is often great when it comes to translations, interpreting and in particular the special form of simultaneous interpreting.

Translation is the rendering of one language to another in written form.  These writings range significantly from legal deeds, certificates and agreements to press releases and website texts.   Accurate translations require particular expert knowledge in the respective field in order to guarantee a meaningful translation of the text, including the correctness of the technical terms used and also the adequate involvement of the audience and the target market.

“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug”
[Mark Twain]

Interpreting is the oral transfer of spoken words.  It is a critical component of technical lectures, business meetings and court proceedings when there are participants and or observers who are not fluent in the language presented. International conferences usually collaborate with simultaneous interpreters, who work together in pairs in their respective language combination. These professionals `interpret` directly into their headsets, and their voices are then transmitted live, thus without any loss of time, via the various audio channels to the audience.  Simultaneous translation requires a high degree of concentration, and therefore is often performed by teams of two who switch off every 20 minutes. By deploying two professionals, we are able to guarantee that no word fails to be heard and that each spoken word is reproduced correctly. As is the case with the “four-eyes” principle for translations.

Negotiations and talks, regardless of whether they are of a legal, economic or political nature, are usually interpreted consecutively.   One of the dialog partners finishes his speech and the interpreter reproduces it in the other language. The other dialog partner then gives his reply and the interpreter translates it into the language of the first dialog partner. What is special about this kind of interpreting is the fact that the interpreter switches between the two languages, requiring both perfect fluency in both languages.
